The Vegalitarian Society - Health

[edit] Human Health

"Meat, eggs, and dairy products contain absolutely no fiber or complex carbohydrates, and they are packed with saturated fat and cholesterol. In the short term, eating meat, dairy products, and eggs is likely to make a person fat and lethargic. In the long term, eating these products can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, several types of cancer, and an array of other problems." - Bruce Friedrich[1]

[edit] Meat

Human bodies are not made for meat consumption. Our extensive intestinal tracts are made for the absorption of plant-based nutrients and is not capable of digesting meat in time to prevent it from putrefying, causing problems later in life including prostate and colon cancer.

[edit] Fish

Fish does not only accumulate poison like Mercury, parasites live in their flesh that, if eaten raw, are transfered live to our bodies. The depletion of the ocean's species is a direct result of unregulated overfishing. The purported health benefits of omega oils in fish are easily replaced with superior plant based oils like pumkin seed, walnut, flax, and olive oils. The pollution in fresh and ocean water has caused serious endocrine disruption and physical abnormalities in aquatic life. Potential fetal damage has prompted warning labels in supermarkets in California to alert the expectant mothers about neurotoxicity of mercury and other environmental contaminants.

[edit] Dairy

In order for a dairy cow to produce enough milk to be profitable it needs to produce a calf every year. If a female, the infant cow is reared to become another dairy cow, but if it is a male, it is either destined for a short, agonizing life in a veal crate or it is promptly killed and its stomach lining, rennet, used for the coagulation of milk into cheese. The majority of the world's population is lactose intolerant, incapable of digesting cow milk. Cow milk became a staple in northern Europe, leading to a slow evolutionary modification allowing for digestibility in some humans. This is not the norm. Modern dairy farming techniques employ an array of antibiotics and growth hormones. Pesticide residues from feed, air pollution and water pollution further taint the milk. Air and water-borne toxins and pharmaceutical residue are stored in an animal's fat. Dairy consumers take in an undesirable array of concentrated toxins, hormones, and drugs when consuming butter, cheese, and milk. High dairy consumption coincides with high rates of osteoporosis, breast cancer (accelerated by endocrine-disruptive hormone residue), obesity, and other health problems. Cow milk's long-touted calcium benefits are complicated by the high-protein content of milk and animal foods. In a high state of acidosis (the result of an excessively high protein diet), the body re-establishes homeostasis by leeching calcium from the bones, to be excreted by the kidneys, increasing risk of painful kidney stones, and de-mineralizing the skeleton, resulting in lower bone density. Better sources of calcium include almonds and dark leafy greens. It is important to not eat excessive protein, and to get adequate Vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, and Vitamin C for optimum absorption.
